Day 1 : Lemosho Gate to Big Tree Camp (2650m)

Register at the park gate for a 2½ hour trip to the Rongai trailhead. Meet your guide and porters before starting your journey from NaleMoru settlement. The little twisting trail crosses maize fields before entering a pine forest and gently ascending through it. The road is not steep, and the hike is not difficult, but rather a leisurely walk through magnificent scenery. Your first night will be spent in a cave camp at an elevation of around 2,650 meters. There will be a restroom and a wooden table with benches, but no hut. You can get water just down the trail from First Cave. Elevation: 1830m/6000ft to 2650m/8700ft Distance: 6km/4mi Hiking Time: 2-3 hours Habitat: Montane Forest Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Day 2: Big Tree Camp (2650m) to Shira 1 Camp (3500m)

Today, you’ll cover a lot of land as you go across a plateau of lush moorland and heather dotted with volcanic rock formation. We will travel via Shira 1 Camp, where we can often see Kibo Peak floating in the clouds as we approach towards Shira 2. We gain a good bit of altitude as we approach Shira 1, and parts of the trail are rather steep. As you approach Shira 2, you will get the opportunity to see the Northern Ice fields from the western side of the mountain, along with some rare views of Kibo. Our slow rise across the Shira Plateau’s moorland will aid acclimatization, and we will be treated to spectacular panoramic views.

Elevation: 2650m/8700ft to 3500m/11,500ft
Distance: 8km/5mi
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 3 : Shira 2 Camp (3850m) to Barranco Camp (4000m)

Your hike begins with an ascent with far-reaching panoramic views, taking you through the climatic zone of the upland desert and onto the lava ridges beneath the Western Breach glaciers. You will reach the prominent pinnacle of the Lava Tower (4640 m), our high point for the day and an excellent spot to eat lunch. In the afternoon, we make a difficult descent to our overnight camp at the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960 m), which is shielded by huge cliffs yet offers expansive views of the plains below.

Elevation: 3850m/12,600ft to 4000m/13,000ft
Distance: 8km/5mi
Walking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4 : Barranco Camp (4000m) to Karanga Camp (4050m)

Our day starts with a descent into the Great Barranco, a massive valley. We next exit sharply, ascending the Great Barranco Wall that separates us from Kibo’s southeastern slopes. It’s a long and arduous climb over rock that’s not tricky. We travel beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers before arriving in the Karanga valley. From here, we have a tough walk up from Karanga valley to our overnight camp at Karanga camp, which is located at 3963 metres. For those who feel strong, we will proceed on a mid-afternoon acclimatization trip up to roughly 4200m before returning to camp for the night.

Elevation: 4000m/13,000ft to 4050m/13,250ft
Distance: 5km/3mi
Climbing Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 5 : Karanga Camp (4050) to Barafu Camp (4700m)

After a wonderful night’s sleep and breakfast, we headed out on our trip to Barafu camp at 4640m. The climb will take us past bleak scree hills with no vegetation surrounding us. The altitude adds to the difficulty of the uphill walk. When we get at camp, we eat and relax in the afternoon before embarking on a long night and day. It is critical to be hydrated and warm. We eat an early dinner and try to get some sleep because we’ll be up between 11 p.m. and 12 p.m. to begin the hike to the summit.

Elevation: 4050m/13,250ft to 4700m/15,350ft
Distance: 4km/2mi
Climbing Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 6 : Barafu Camp (4700m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Millennium Camp (3090m)

We proceed to the peak between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers quite early in the morning (between midnight and two in the morning). In order to reach Stella Point on the crater rim, you travel northwest and climb over dense scree. This part of the journey is the most physically and mentally taxing. You will be rewarded with the most breathtaking sunrise you are likely to ever witness when you pause for a brief rest at Stella Point. Those who hike faster might be able to see the sunrise from the top. The one-hour climb to the peak from Stella Point may be completely covered in snow. You have arrived at the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent when you reach Uhuru Peak! We start our descent from the peak by going directly down to the Mweka Camp, with a lunch halt at Barafu. For the loose gravel heading down, you might want trekking poles and gaiters. We spend our final night on the mountain in Mweka Camp.

Elevation: 4700m/15,350ft to 5895m/19,340ft
Down to 3090m/10,150ft
Distance: 5km/3mi up / 13km/8mi down
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours up / 5-6 hours down
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 7 : Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Hotel

We continue the descent to the Mweka Park Gate to pick up your summit certificates after breakfast. It can be muddy and wet at lower elevations. Trekking poles and gaiters will be useful. There will likely be lots of opportunities to wear shorts and t-shirts (make sure to have warmer clothes and rain gear on hand). It takes an additional hour to go reach Mweka Village from the gate. You will be picked up by a Meijo Safaris car at Mweka Gate and driven back to your hotel.

Elevation: 3090m/10,150ft to 1680m/5500ft
Distance: 10km/6mi
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Forest
Meals: Breakfast

Frequently Asked Questions About this Route

How Long Does it Take to Climb Kilimanjaro Using the Lemosho Route?

On the mountain, the Lemosho route can be completed in as little as 7 days (six nights). For a better altitude acclimation regimen, it is best to do it over eight days (seven nights). You have a 90% probability of reaching the summit if you spend eight days (seven nights) on the peak.

The Lemosho Route is regarded as one of the easiest route to climb Kilimanjaro in terms of acclimatization and daily altitude gain. This route’s additional time and distance reduces the chance of altitude sickness and helps in proper acclimatization. Nonetheless, it still involves the difficult climb up the Barranco Wall and the final night’s strenuous push to the peak.

The Lemosho route has one of the greatest summit success percentages on the peak because of its length. The average success rate for all operators is 90% for the 8-day trek and 85% for the 7-day trek, while official numbers are unavailable. Nonetheless, we have a 92% success record for the 7-day alternative and a success rate of over 95% for the 8-day Lemosho method.

Our mountain chefs and waiters will prepare and serve your breakfasts, lunches, and meals during the trip. The menu has been created in collaboration with a professional nutritionist to guarantee that our meals are both delicious and energy-rich, providing hikers with the required nourishment.

Of all the routes, the Lemosho Route is regarded as having the most breathtaking scenery. Trekkers follow the path from the mountain’s west side through a verdant jungle before merging with the Lemosho Route to traverse the breathtaking Shira Plateau. The views, especially from the southern circuit, are breathtaking as the route passes across the mountain’s west and south.

You will go through five different climatic zones en route to the summit, and the panorama is incredibly varied. Before ascending into the low alpine zone of moorlands and wild meadows, the hike starts in a rain forest on the lower slopes. You then hike through the high alpine region before arriving at the glacial zone. Shira Plateau, Barranco, and Lava Tower are just a some of the breathtaking locations you will see.
