Tarangire National Park

About & Why Go On a Tarangire Safari

Tarangire National Park is located about 100 kmfrom Arusha along the way leading to Manyara, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti. In northern Tanzania, the seasonal Tarangire National Park occupies an area of 2,850 km². It is Tanzania’s sixth-largest national park and promises some unrivaled elephant sightings—yes, it is estimated that the park is home to the largest population of elephants in northern Tanzania—around 2,500—and these figures are growing rapidly by an estimated 6% each year. Some herds of elephants can be as large as 600 strong.

The Tarangire River is also situated in this park. This river winds through the center of the park, offering animal nourishment and excellent viewing for visitors. Huge herds of animals and birds converge along this river every day, so you won’t miss anything for sure. Many baobab trees are also available, amazing trees that can survive for thousands of years. In the rainy seasons, species can be observed, but the abundance of biodiversity during the dry seasons appears to be better.

During the rainy season, the seasonal visitors scatter over a 20,000 sq km range until they exhaust the green plains and the river calls once more. The swamps, tinged green year-round, are the focus for 550 bird varieties, the most breeding species in one habitat anywhere in the world. Pythons climb trees, as do their lions and leopards, lounging in the branches where the fruit of the sausage tree disguises the twitch of a tail.

Best Time to visit Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is a beautiful place to see animals all year round. The Tarangire River is the main water supply in this area, and animals tend to settle near it during the dry season (June to October). During the rainy season (April to May), many animals leave the park because the black cotton soil hurts their feet.
